Bevacizumab is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody that blocks angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels) by inhibiting vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A). VEGF-A is a chemical signal that stimulates angiogenesis in a variety of diseases, especially in cancer. It is the first biologic to be approved in a new class of drugs know as angiogenesis inhibitors - drugs which work by blocking the growth of blood vessels, thus denying tumors blood, oxygen and other nutrients needed for growth.
