The hepatocyte cell line Hepa-E1 was derived from water eel. The cells show no contact inhibition and have been reported to show apoptosis in the presence of actinomycin D, humic acid or TGF-beta 1. Normal culture conditions are at 26-28°C, but maintenance at 4°C for up to 400 days was described as well.
